The eConsultant model provides GPs with access to specialist input about care for adult patients with complex chronic conditions within 72 hours. The eConsultant Program provides support for GPs and patients when they reach a point in care where input from a specialist regarding cardiac, respiratory, diabetes, thyroid, ophthalmology, dermatology, endocrinology or general medical management is required. Currently such patients are referred by GPs to outpatient departments where patients can experience long wait times. In April 2023, eConsultant service has expanded to include Endocrinology and Dermatology in addition to General Medicine for adult patients (16 years and over).

Professor David McIntyre trained in endocrinology in Australia and Belgium and is the Senior Staff Specialist in Endocrinology and Obstetric Medicine at the Mater and specialises in the medical complications of pregnancy.
Associate Professor Jim Muir qualified as a specialist dermatologist in 1994 and is the Director of the Department of Dermatology at the Mater.
Dr Narelle Fagermo has extensive experience as a hospital-based general medicine specialist at the Mater Hospital, reviewing and treating patients with chronic and complex conditions.

Professor Claire Jackson (CHSRI), Dr Narelle Fagermo (our Mater General Medicine eConsultant), and Dr Jos (GP, Leichardt Medical, Mount Isa) have shared their experience with eConsultant in Western Queensland.
