Azithromycin shortage

  • Queensland Health have received advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) that there are shortages of multiple azithromycin medicines – some are unavailable due to manufacturing issues, with other brands consequently experiencing increased demand leading to cascading shortages.
  • To support access, the Commonwealth have approved an overseas-registered alternative via the section 19A pathway. This product is the 3x 500mg tablet presentation, which can be ordered directly from the importation approval holder, Reach Pharmaceuticals – full information is on the TGA 19A approvals database.
  • Reach Pharmaceuticals Pty Ltd, can be contacted for details on supply on 0422 429 648.
  • We are advised that considerable stocks of an SAS product (Alembic 500mg x 30) are also held in Queensland Health facilities.

The Commonwealth is keen to receive any feedback regarding challenges with access and suitability of alternatives to inform future s19A approvals or other shortage mitigation activities. To provide feedback on any challenges or if you have any further enquiries about this matter, please contact BBVCDU@health.qld.gov.au
