Quality Improvement

Supporting quality improvement activities that enhance patient outcomes and practice performance.

Quality Improvement (QI) is a structured approach to improving the safety, effectiveness, efficiency and patient-centredness of healthcare. It involves using data, teamwork, reflection and evidence- based methods to identify opportunities for improvement, test changes and measure outcomes.

Continuous quality improvement supports practices to strengthen clinical systems, improve patient care, make better use of data and build a culture of ongoing learning and improvement.

How Western Queensland PHN Supports Quality Improvement

Western Queensland PHN works in partnership with general practices to build quality improvement capability across the region. Support may include:

  • Quality improvement education and training
  • Data-informed improvement activities
  • Practice support and coaching
  • Resources and tools to guide improvement projects
  • Assistance with quality improvement planning and implementation

Practice Incentives Program Quality Improvement (PIP QI)

Overview

The Practice Incentives Program Quality Improvement (PIP QI) Incentive supports general practices to undertake quality improvement activities and use practice data to improve patient outcomes and deliver best-practice care. Practices participating in the incentive work with their local Primary Health Network to meet program requirements and undertake ongoing quality improvement activities.

Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHOs) and other organisations funded under the Indigenous Australians’ Health Programme (IAHP) have a well-established system of using primary health data to undertake quality improvement activities. These activities help improve the delivery of primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. For the purposes of the PIP QI Incentive, IAHP funded organisations will continue to provide data against the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander National Key Performance Indicators (nKPIs), within their existing arrangement with the Department of Health.

Western Queensland PHN Support for PIP QI

Western Queensland PHN supports eligible practices participating in the PIP QI Incentive by providing guidance on quality improvement activities and supporting the use of practice data to drive improvements in patient care.
