Are you committed to mental health and wellbeing in rural and remote communities, or have experience working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in these places? We are seeking a Coordinator, Mental Health, AOD and Wellbeing to help drive integrated, culturally grounded services that are led by and responsive to local communities.

About Western Queensland PHN

Western Queensland Primary Health Network (WQPHN) is an independent, not‑for‑profit organisation funded by the Australian Government to strengthen primary health care across Western Queensland. We work in close partnership with local health providers, communities and key stakeholders to understand the unique needs of rural and remote populations and deliver services that ensure people receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time. We are committed to strong governance, culturally safe practice, and supporting our people to do meaningful work that delivers real benefits for communities.

The Role

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Coordinator to strengthen the commissioning, coordination and integration of primary mental health, alcohol and other drug (AOD), and wellbeing services across Western Queensland.

This role plays a key part in improving access, service quality and outcomes for communities, with a strong focus on rural and remote populations and people with complex needs.

Working closely with service providers, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), government, community stakeholders, and people with lived and living experience, you will support evidence-informed planning, service development and capacity building aligned to a stepped care approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate regional mental health, AOD and social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) service planning, commissioning and integration
  • Support delivery of key regional strategies, including implementation of the WQPHN Mental Health, Suicide Prevention and AOD Regional Plan and relevant national agreements
  • Strengthen service pathways and integration, particularly for people with co-occurring mental health and AOD needs
  • Support development of AOD prevention, harm reduction and treatment pathways across the region
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders to improve access, reduce service gaps and enhance outcomes for priority populations
  • Support workforce capability development, including Communities of Practice and stakeholder learning opportunities
  • Support culturally safe and evidence-based service delivery aligned with national frameworks and Closing the Gap priorities
  • Contribute to reporting, contract performance monitoring and governance requirements for commissioned services

The Right Person

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or significant experience in mental health, AOD, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, or related fields
  2. Strong understanding of primary health care systems, particularly in rural and remote communities
  3. Experience working with diverse stakeholders including government, community organisations and clinicians
  4. Demonstrated ability in project coordination, service development and continuous improvement
  5. Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  6. Experience using data to inform planning and decision-making
  7. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (including SharePoint) and other office productivity tools, with aptitude to learn new software and systems
  8. A current driver’s licence, unrestricted for work purposes.

Our Working Environment

This role will ideally be based in the Western Queensland region, such as Longreach, Mount Isa, Roma, Winton or surrounds, though applicants from across Queensland are welcome to apply.

At WQPHN, you’ll be part of a supportive, collaborative and values-driven team working across a vast and diverse region of nearly one million square kilometres. Our work is connected, flexible and outcomes-focused, with strong relationships across health services, communities and partner organisations.
